Forget Superintelligence (for a moment) We're witnessing the Supercreativity explosion
I mean, AGI IS COMING, but for now let's enjoy the pretty pictures.
The current trend, and controversy of AI generated images, videos, and others is only the tip of the iceberg of things to come. That is because I (and many people way smarter than me) think Artificial Intelligence is the greatest invention humanity will make and probably our final invention (or at least, the last one unassisted by it)
But What is Superintelligence?
In his great book Superintelligence Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom, uses the term for an AI that is capable of performing any intellectual task that a human can do, but at a much higher level of proficiency. The book also discusses the potential benefits of a super-intelligent AI, including the possibility that it could solve some of the world's most pressing problems, such as poverty and the climate crisis (the discussions about the future of AI is a NO-CHILL ZONE, either is human extinction under our robot overlords, or Complete Bliss and utopia…)
Bostrom also explores the ethical and moral implications of creating superintelligent machines, and suggests that it may be possible to create "Friendly AI". I think this is what we all should strive for, of course, but then again in the book Bostrom calls for global collaboration and regulation for AI, and buddy, if we haven’t been able to tackle climate change as a unified species, I seriously doubt that we will be able to unify as a global species to regulate AI, but hopefully I’m wrong here…
Also he says that at one point when an AI is capable of improving itself it wil exponentially continue to improve and work on itself increasing its capabilities beyond human comprehension into what is called an Intelligence Explosion. (which seems pretty real if we see the language being used by people way smarter and more powerful on this field)
Why Supercreativity?
So, we're still not at the point where AI can outperform humans in EVERY aspect, but one area where AI excels is in creating digital art at an alarming rate. This includes simulating old-school photographs and generating beautiful graphics of cute dogs and adorable cats.
Midjourney, DALLE-2, Stable diffusion are the hottest AIs for creating art using them as catalysts for human creativity, with an almost endless range of creativity tools such as these democratize the capacity to create art from old school analogue photos of things that never existed to potential designs of fashion, architecture and so much more.
And yes there is still some backlash from some people claiming this is not “real art”, which lets be honest is just the ruckus of those who don’t understand the technology and aren’t prepared for change. Now, I’m not saying it is not without it’s problems,There has been some controversies regarding copyright for the databases used to feed and build these AIs and ther has been concerns regarding gender and racial stereotypes, but it is being dealt with.
Suprecreativity Explosion
But let’s look beyond that. Why am I saying we will be witnessing a Supercreativity explosion, well, because unlike the Superintelligence explosion which is this Technological Singularity that will radically change everything for humanity this is an explosion that will unleash our wildest dreams. The Supercreativity explosion means that with these tools anyone with the capacity to interact with a digital device can bring forth their imaginations unto the real world anything they can imagine.
No longer will people need to learn years of a craft that they might not enjoy, or end up hating after studying 4 years at an art school. Nor will they be restricted by a potential limitation due to their own bodies and the tools to create said art. With these AIs anyone can be an artist, in many fields; You can create AI analogue photos, 3D Renders , animes comics, 3D renders , Linocut designs, character design, animation and so much more, the possibilities are endless.
So imagine how MUCH we could be creating and expressing our very own inner visions and thrust them upon the world to see. And yeah not everything is going to be great but thankfully the Ikea effect exists and that will make our own pieces of art invaluable and incredibly satisfactory to be curating, creating and in a reiterative manner approaching closer and closer our true vision.
8 Billion creative minds producing and manufacturing their wildest dreams, in all the spectrum of possibilities and qualities, thanks to these AI tools,And this is just extrapolating the few tools we have today not thinking about the future…
What are things to come?
In the near future imagine these creative AIs helping us design buildings, or pieces that we could 3D print bringing upon the real world our ideas at an incredible pace. Also in a short period of time without a doubt these tools will be used for filmmaking, advertisement industry, animation, practically any realm of creative industries will be enhanced by these tools and will be allowing more and more creatives to work at an accelerated pace and productivity like never before.
But let’s look beyond the physical realm and let’s imagine the future of virtual reality with tools such as these. We are inside a virtual world of our creation and alongside a Supercreative AI, could be creating virtual worlds of our desires in the style that most pleases us and we can fill it with simulated humans, characters and play in this sandbox like gods with our creations.
We could be the architects of our world do if they were not bound by the resistance of materials, the laws of physics ,or even euclidean geometry. And then think that those AIS could be given procedural algorithms to be constantly creating endless virtual realms for us to explore.
We could be creating entire universes within our virtual simulations, in an almost endless stream of creativity and possibilities. It is the awakening of a multiverse of possibilities I cannot even fathom. Which is not mentioning at all the computational capacity this would require for us to process and create, all of this art, all of these designs, all of these virtual worlds.
Which leads me to believe the future of creativity is an explosion that will be triggered by the massive adoption of these and other creative AI tools, at first we will be scared, not sure how to use them and it’s repercussions. But I think little by little we will be engaging ad creating alongside them deeper and meaningful pieces of art.
The future of humanity’s growth?
And circling back to the possibilities of simulated worlds and realities, I think this can be the tip of the iceberg for things to come because again if we have virtual worlds curated by supercreative superintelligent AIs, what incentives are there to go outwards and explore a “boring”(comparatively speaking) Cosmos instead of exploring our simulated virtual worlds that at one point will be indistinguishable from reality? Very little if you ask me.
Which is why I bring forth a paper called “The Transcension Hypothesis” , evolutionary developmental systems theorist John Smart proposes an answer to Fermi’s Paradox , in which sufficiently advanced civilizations throughout the cosmos instead of growing outside and expand towards the cosmos, they grow inwards in ever increasing density of computation. Where little by little civilizations learn and develop technologies that are able to eventual create what is called a STEM Compression (Space, Time Energy and Matter) to replicate the conditions similar to a black hole and then these advanced civilizations exists in virtual realms of an almost “endless” concentration and density of computing power. inside a Black-hole-like-conditions. (If you want to watch a simple explanation see this video)
But yeah that’s possibly one of the craziest ideas ever. We’ll see if an AI that can make pretty pictures will lead us eventually to that.
